Thumbs down New Orlean Saints are in deep S#$@

per adam schefter (and others)
Quote:
NFL security determined between 22 and 27 defensive players on the Saints, as well as at least one asst. coach, maintained a bounty program.

Investigation reviewed 18.000 documents totaling more than 50,000 pages. Commissioner Goodell will determine the discipline.

NFL determined that former Saints DC Gregg Williams administered the program with knowledge of other defensive coaches.

Discipline for the Saints could include fines, suspensions and forfeiture of draft choices.

NFL investigation of Saints began in 2010 when allegations were made that Saints targeted QBs such as Brett Favre and Kurt Warner.
Quote:

Also In Tennis

""The bounty program was administered by defensive coordinator Gregg Williams with the knowledge of other defensive coaches. Funds were contributed on occasion by Williams." The NFL said its "investigation "showed that the total amount of funds in the pool may have reached $50,000 or more at its height during the 2009 playoffs. "

Quote:
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the NFL has determined that MLB Jonathan Vilma was one of the primary culprits in the Saints' "pay for performance" bounty program that will result in NFL discipline.
"In the week of the NFC Championship Game," Schefter said on NFL Live Friday, "Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma put $10,000 in cash on a table and said 'this goes to the guy that knocks out Brett Favre.'" Those weren't Vilma's exact words, but they were similar, according to Schefter, and he's sure to be atop the league's target list for impending discipline. It's worth nothing that Vilma is due $5.4 million in 2012 and has been discussed as a possible salary cap casualty. We wouldn't expect him back with the Saints.

Hmm, I can't say this surprises me. I expect there are a few other teams in the league that have done similar too...

yeah im fairly sure this is happening with other teams too, aparently The Washington Post is reporting that former Redskins players are revealing that the same system was in place during Greg Williams tenure there.

Quote:
Former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams appears to be in very deep trouble with Goodell, as comparisons continue to be raised with the 1963 case in which Commissioner Pete Rozelle suspended Paul Hornung and Alex Karras for an entire season for their involvement in gambling. According to King, when Goodell first confronted Williams with evidence that he had been involved in paying bounties, Williams denied it, which will surely not win Williams any points. He has since admitted his involvement.

Saints head coach Sean Payton may be in big trouble as well, with one league source involved in the investigation saying the way Payton ran things “Reminds me of the Nixon White House.”

[Peter] King’s sources suggest that Goodell will come down hardest on Williams, Payton, Saints G.M. Mickey Loomis and Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma, who reportedly offered $10,000 cash to any player who could knock Brett Favre out of the NFC Championship Game.

Goodell made his mark as commissioner by cracking down on players’ off-field misconduct. Those who encouraged injuring opposing players through on-field misconduct are about to feel Goodell’s wrath.

Pretty huge, much bigger than I thought it would be.

I assume it's suspended without pay too?

Yes the suspensions are without pay. in payton's case it's $8mil.From what I read this is minor compared to what Roger has planned for the Players involved (Vilma, will Smith ect). Also now it seems the US congress will be getting involved too.

Hmm, I think it might be getting blown out of proportion.

I like Kurt Warners stance on it, even though he was one that was targeted, he's of the opinion this has been a part of the game for a long time (hoping you beat the guy so hard he wants to not go back on the field)

The difference would be if this is done outside of the rules of the game, but most of the footage (late hit in the endzone aside) is of lots of legal, hard hitting play.

It just seems that the league is punishing the saints harshly, not for the crime itself but for been lied to on multiple times.fairly certain if they admitted it the first time the sanctions wouldnt be so bad (perhaps a 4 game suspension for Sean Peyton instead of a 1yr suspension)

Game. Set. Match.
This is going to change the NFL on many levels.

But that's a speech that will be going on in 31 other locker rooms? No bounty is mentioned, he asks people to beat on their good players. 31 other teams will be asking their D to do the same or they have no business taking the field...

I'm more surprised by some of the ex players & coaches who are coming out so shocked about it... like it didn't happen on their teams..

Also as much as that tape has on it, there is absolutely nothing to do with a bounty on it, just a coach telling his players to hit the opposing teams star players HARD, and tbh, isn't that their job? Don't you sign a pass rusher for him to destroy the opposing QB etc..

Sure the tape doesn't mention bounties, but somehow I don't think its gonna help their appeal at all, also there is a difference between telling your players to hit hard and trying to concuss and tear the acl's (Crabtree) of their opposition.

Personally I think Irvin sounds like a bit of an idiot.

http://www.nfl.com/videos/new-orlean...aints-bounties

Did he really say '3 or 4 years ago this could be said, we didn't know, now we know about these ACL injuries'... what?!?!?!?

Also quite odd, all the footage going on while he talks is of good, clean, hard hits, to the upper body, but not helmet to helmet.
