Question Run A LAN From Mobile Data Connection

One of the big reasons we stopped running Lanarchy events was because we couldn't connect to anything and everything was requiring a connection.

I was just wondering if, in this day and age of 4G, things might be different now?

Is anyone in Watford on EE? Is there a 4G signal at the Church Hall we use?

I was actually asked the other day if you still did Lans

is 4G needed or will 3G be enough?
Most things only require a connection to confirm legality before it launches etc.
Either that or multiple phones being used to split the burden on data usage and speed, the iphone can make itself a wireless hotspot so would just need a few people doing that.

The other option I guess is with enough popularity fo recuring lans again have a internet tax ont he lan if that makes sense, part of the cost of attending goes towards paying for a permenant connection at the church (Obviously being aproved and installed by the church) and we simply pay for the line through the events. Not sur eif that is workable. - unsure due to area but you wont need line rental etc will you? Just a cable connection so intenret charge. I am sure we can cover 20 a month through 3-4 events a year? Or even just part of the Lanarchy donations.

Yeah, 3G+ would probably be enough. I wonder how much data we'd use. I guess as long as no-one is downloading actual games, we'd come in under 10 or 20 gig. Three probably wouldn't bat an eye lid.

I'm thinking of this along the lines of a possible Lanarchy re-launch, but would probably still only envisage maybe two LANs a year. They are a lot of work...

Remember, all of this is still hypothetical, but I like to know what my options are

I have been to a LAN before (over a year ago now) where everyone used someones mobile to connect to steam to get it to work, then they played gamed as LAN, but they needed the internet for steam. I think steams offline mode is a lot better now. But I have seen it done.

4g would probably work, but is it still expensive?

Getting a proper ADSL connection would be ideal, but if memory serves me correctly this idea was not possible due to the lack of something or other..

Yeah, they couldn't get ADSL, we'd looked into it before.

4G isn't too bad, but it's limited to 5 or 8GB, which might not be enough for us.

Next time I'm in Watford I'll swing by and do a signal test. If I can clock 5mbps+ then I think it would be sufficient.

Would people be interested in a LAN in central London?
